Stumptown gets name-dropped a lot. It’s on boutique hotel menus, in Portland airport gates, and apparently on Alaska Airlines flights often enough that passengers land, google “what was that coffee,” and end up with a monthly subscription.

If you haven’t tried it yet, or you’ve had it once and want to know what to actually order, here’s the no-hype guide.

What Stumptown Actually Is

Founded in Portland, Oregon in 1999, back when “specialty coffee” was still a fringe concept. Stumptown was among the first U.S. roasters to pursue Direct Trade sourcing: paying above Fair Trade premiums directly to farms, building long-term relationships, and publishing the terms publicly.

  • The Colombia Familia Cantillo is named after the family that grows it
  • The Kenya Karumandi is named after the specific washing station in Kirinyaga
  • These are actual places and actual people, paid well above commodity prices
  • The sourcing model is still central: not marketing, not certification theater

The result is coffee with flavor complexity that reviewers actually taste and describe: citrus notes, berry jam, chocolate, nougat. When those words appear in a review, they’re reporting an experience, not copying the label.

“Stumptown has been our favorite for 20 years now. Consistently superb, every bean.”

Who Is Stumptown For?

✅ Great fit if you:

  • Buy grocery-store coffee and feel like something’s missing
  • Get espresso drinks at cafes and want to replicate them at home
  • Are tired of bitter, over-roasted “dark” roasts
  • Want to actually taste what origin and roast level contribute
  • Drink enough to make a subscription worthwhile
  • Are buying a gift for someone who takes coffee seriously

⚠️ Heads up if you:

  • Want Starbucks-level char. Stumptown skews lighter than their labels suggest.
  • Are price-sensitive: this is premium coffee, not the best deal per ounce
  • Prefer flavored coffees. Stumptown is natural notes only.
  • Only drink instant. Different category entirely.
“When I find Hundred Mile in my subscription box, I skip from the mailbox like a kid. Even my wife and son, who don’t drink black coffee, like this one.”

Where to Start

If you make espresso: Hair Bender first. French Roast if you want the bolder shot without bitterness.

If you brew drip or pour-over: Holler Mountain. The most-reviewed, most-reordered everyday cup in the catalog. Works in everything.

If you want the best light roast available: Homestead. Sometimes seasonal. Worth tracking down.

If you’re not sure yet: The Blend Shuffle subscription sends you a different blend every two weeks. No commitment to a single bag. Customers call opening the box the best part of the delivery.

On price: Stumptown runs $16 to $18 for a 12 oz bag, around $40/lb for single-origins. More than grocery store, less than your Saturday-only local roaster. Multiple reviewers have noted that ordering direct produces a noticeably better cup than the same bag bought at a retailer: fresher roast date, better flavor. The subscription adds per-bag savings on top of that.
